Can Online Therapy Work Across Countries and Time Zones?

By Carla Costa · Published 11 August 2026 · 5 min read

The honest answer is yes, with a few practical adjustments — and it's worth being specific about what actually changes when the person on the other side of the call is in a different country, rather than assuming either "nothing changes" or "everything is harder."

What doesn't change

The structure and substance of a session are identical regardless of geography. A conversation happens the same way over video whether both people are in the same city or several time zones apart; the same is true for a guided hypnotherapy session — the process doesn't depend on physical proximity. What matters for the work itself is language fit, rapport, and a clear focus — none of which are affected by distance.

What does change, practically

  • Scheduling around time difference. This is the main real adjustment — finding a slot that works for both people, which sometimes means an earlier or later session than either would default to locally.
  • Consistency of connection. A stable internet connection and a quiet, private space matter more across a video call than in person, simply because there's more relying on the technical link.
  • Awareness of local context, where relevant — a therapist working with an international caseload benefits from understanding common expat experiences, even if the core work is the same.

Making the logistics actually work

In practice, this usually comes down to picking a recurring time slot early on, ideally one that doesn't require either person to be unusually early or late on a regular basis, and treating that slot as fixed rather than renegotiating it every session.

Beyond that, the difference between working with someone locally and working with someone abroad tends to matter far less than people expect going in — what usually matters more is whether the work happens in the language you're actually comfortable processing feelings in.
